WAIT CONTINUES FOR NEW TOWNS

August 20, 2025

A survey from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and YouGov has probed public attitudes about the potential development of new towns.

The results were released as the RTPI published its  Futureproof New Towns interim report and as the wait continues for recommendations from New Towns Taskforce, an independent expert advisory panel appointed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

The survey results showed:

  • 73% of people asked lack confidence these towns will still serve communities well in 50 years’ time
  • 74% believe incoming residents should have the greatest influence over planning, design, and funding
  • 82% want developments led by a mix of organisations, not just large housebuilders
  • 59% support experimenting with new planning, design, and funding models

The New Towns Taskforce is due to make recommendations on locations and delivery of the next generation of new towns this summer – initially due to be in July but now during the Parliamentary recess.

The RTPI’s interim report states that successful new towns are dependent on community leadership and engagement, underpinned by consistent, high‑quality design and strong infrastructure connections.

We will watch with interest to see the locations and what this will mean for the planning process as well as those with potential development land or interests.
