LOCAL PLAN WATCH: SOMERSET CONSULTATION OPEN FOR COMMENTS

July 14, 2026

Somerset Council has fired the starting pistol on its new Local Plan with the opening of its first consultation stage.

The local planning authority has invited views on what the planning blueprint should contain and how it should engage with the local community and interested parties.

It is carrying out the Scoping Consultation (Regulation 20) – a legal requirement – under the new plan‑making system for England which means the Local Plan must be produced within a 30-months timescale.

At this stage the consultation will not set out detailed policies or feature specific sites. Instead, it will propose the broad matters to be covered.

Somerset is consulting on:

  • draft scope of the Local Plan
  • draft Local Plan engagement plan
  • draft Local Plan vision and outcomes

It is also consulting about its draft Spatial Strategy Topic Paper  for the pattern, scale and distribution of development across the county, its draft Role and Function of Settlements Topic Paper and draft Sustainability Appraisal of the Spatial Strategy options.

The consultation is open until Friday July 24.
