Councils will be given £68m to build thousands of homes on disused brownfield sites, the government has announced.
The money has been awarded under the Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 (BLRF2) to 54 councils in England to turn help turn surplus land into new homes.
It will allow councils to clear empty buildings, former car parks and industrial sites, carry out decontamination and improve infrastructure such as internet coverage, water supplies and power connections.
The funding is expected to enable the development of 5,200 homes to be built across the country.
The three-year £180 million Brownfield Land Release Fund 2 was launched in July 2022. Some £95m has already been awarded from the fund to help councils build an expected 6,800 homes.
Projects awarded funding as part of the latest round include £2.9m for 220 homes on a vacant site in Manchester, £1.7m for more than 100 homes on brownfield land in Weston-Super-Mare, and £2.2m for 80 homes on a former industrial site in Eastbourne.
Crawley Borough Council received the most, £3.9m, while the lowest amount went to Lancaster City Council, £73,440.
Unfortunately, councils in our immediate area – Dorset Council, BCP Council, Hampshire County Council and West Sussex County Council – have missed out this time around.
Councils to have benefited in the south have included Crawley Borough Council, Eastbourne Borough Council, Isle of Wight Council, Lewes District Council and North Somerset Council.
